I've noticed this over the years, normally I think when the phenomenon was stretched-out over time, perhaps when reactions are slowed by drinking for instance. What I noticed outside my immediate circle of friendlies was a sort of tribal shorthand greeting almost akin to gang sign language. If you shared values and maybe dressed or carried yourself in a certain way you might be noticed by others. I don't mean salarymen in blue blazers on the street - I first noticed this in the party culture and there is a lot of drug use there which may draw-out the reactions and allow these things to almost play-out in slow motion.
